The NIU Office of Research Compliance (ORC) administers the Northern Illinois University policies on research that collects data (1) from human subjects, (2) from live vertebrate animals, and (3) using recombinant DNA or biohazards. Faculty or students intending to perform such research must prepare paperwork, in advance, in accordance with the procedures of the (1) Institutional Review Board (IRB), (2) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC),or (3) Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) .
The function of the NIU Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) is to assist faculty and staff obtain external funding for their research, creative-artistry, public-service, and instructional projects. The OSP can assist in identifying potential funding from federal, state, and local government agencies, foundations, private business and industry and other external sources and in preparing proposals for grants, contracts, and fellowships. With the OSP, the Graduate Student Grants and Fellowships Office can assist graduate students identify external sources for grants and fellowships.
The mission of the at NIU Technology Transfer Office is to encourage the creative endeavors of all members of he University community, safeguarding the rights and interests of all relevant parties in the resulting creative products (such as by obtaining patents and copyrights), and facilitating the rapid dissemination and use of the findings of academic research for the benefit the public. The TTO assists in the negotiation and preparation of contracts with outside sponsors, recruits collaborators and licensees, supports the fulfillment of the terms of these contracts, and assures equitable distribution of the benefits resulting from collaborative efforts.
With more than 400 books in print, the Press publishes on a variety of topics in the humanities, arts, and sciences. Each year it brings out about twenty new books on aspects of history, politics, anthropology, and literature. Russian studies, railroad history, and the history of Chicago and the Midwest are areas of special interest. In fulfilling its broadly educational mission, the Press publishes significant books for general readers as well as for specialists.
The Graduate School at Northern Illinois University The Graduate School at Northern Illinois University offers programs in over 70 academic majors and more than 110 areas of study for master's, doctoral, and other advanced degrees. The University is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and other appropriate national organizations, and is classified Carnegie Foundation as a Doctoral Research University-high activity. Previously, the same foundation classified NIU as a Doctoral/Research University--Extensive. NIU is a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the Universities Research Association, and many other higher-education professional associations.
